Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a little heat)

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated

1/4 cup fresh chives, finely chopped

1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped

3/4 cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 tablespoon lemon juice added, let sit for 5 minutes)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easier cleanup.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper until well combined.

Cut in Butter: Add the cubed cold butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add Cheese and Herbs: Gently fold in the grated cheddar cheese, chopped chives, and chopped parsley until evenly distributed.

Mix in Buttermilk: Make a well in the center of the dry mixture and pour in the buttermilk. Stir gently until the dough comes together, being careful not to overmix.

Shape the Biscuits: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Pat it into a 1-inch thick rectangle. Using a biscuit cutter (or a glass), cut out biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Gather the scraps, reroll, and cut out remaining biscuits.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown and the biscuits have risen beautifully.

Serve: Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack. Serve warm, ideally with a pat of butter or a drizzle of honey.
