Ingredients

4 medium-sized apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well)

1 cup unsalted butter, divided

1 cup packed brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 ½ teaspoons baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup granulated sugar

3 large eggs

1 cup buttermilk

Optional: whipped cream or ice cream for serving

Instructions

Prepare the Apples:

    - Peel, core, and slice the apples into wedges. Set aside.

      Make the Caramel Base:

        - In a medium saucepan, melt ½ cup of butter over low heat.

          - Stir in the brown sugar and cinnamon until the mixture is smooth and bubbly.

            - Pour the caramel mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly across the bottom.

              Arrange the Apples:

                - Layer the apple wedges over the caramel in the baking dish, arranging them in a circular pattern or any design you prefer.

                  Prepare the Cake Batter:

                    - In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

                      - In a separate large bowl, cream the remaining ½ cup of butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

                        - Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.

                          - Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Start and end with the flour mixture and mix until just combined.

                            Combine and Bake:

                              - Carefully pour the batter over the arranged apples and caramel in the baking dish, spreading it evenly with a spatula.

                                - Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

                                  Cool and Serve:

                                    - Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, carefully invert it onto a large serving plate, letting the caramel and apples cascade over the top.

                                      - Serve warm, optionally topped with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
