Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:

6 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon lemon juice

For the Oat Topping:

1 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed

For the Caramel Sauce:

1 cup granulated sugar

6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces

1/2 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Prepare the Caramel Sauce:

    - In a medium saucepan over medium heat, cook the granulated sugar, stirring constantly until it melts and turns a deep amber color (about 5-7 minutes).

      - As soon as it reaches the color, carefully add the butter and stir until melted and combined.

        - Slowly pour in the heavy cream while stirring (the mixture will bubble up) until smooth.

          - Remove from heat, add vanilla extract and salt. Let it cool slightly.

            Prepare the Apple Filling:

              - In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and lemon juice. Toss until the apples are well coated.

                - Pour the apple mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Drizzle half of the caramel sauce over the apples.

                  Make the Oat Topping:

                    - In a separate bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.

                      - Add the cubed cold butter to the bowl and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix it until the mixture is crumbly with pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.

                        Assemble the Crisp:

                          - Evenly distribute the oat topping over the apple filling in the baking dish.

                            Bake:

                              - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the crisp in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly.

                                Serve:

                                  - Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes. Serve warm with additional caramel sauce drizzled on top and a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.
